Auto rickshaw driver beaten up by cops, dies in Tamil Nadu

Tenkasi, Jun 28 (UNI) Close on the heels of the deaths of a father-son duo due to police torture at Sathankulam, a 25-year-old auto rickshaw driver, who was undergoing treatment at Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital (TVMCH) after allegedly assaulted by the police personnel, died late on Saturday night.

The deceased has been identified as N.Kumaresan, an autorickshaw driver hailing from Veerakeralampudur in the district.

The death of Kumaresan sparked a night-long protest by his relatives and the members of the public, who demanded stern action against erring police personnel and arrest them.

Senior police officials held talks with the agitators and restored normalcy.

On a complaint from A.Navaneethakrishnan (55), father of the deceased, the police on Sunday registered a case of suspicious death against Sub Inspector of Police (SI) Chandrasekar and police constable Kumar, attached to Veerakeralampudur police station under Section 174 (3) of the Code of Criminal Procedures.

Subsequently, Tenkasi Superintendent of Police Suguna Singh ordered the suspension of Chandrasekar and Kumar from service, pending inquiry.

Navaneethakrishnan in his complaint stated that there was a property dispute between his son and one Senthil.

The Veerakeralampudur police summoned Kumaresan on May 8, last in connection with the property dispute case, where the SI Chandrasekar verbally abused and slapped him. The next, when Kumaresan was standing at the auto rickshaw stand, the SI asked him to come to the police station for inquiry on May 10.

Kumaresan was severely assaulted by the SI and police constable Kumar during the inquiry. They kicked Kumaresan on his genitals and the chest with their boots. Later, they released him with a a stern warning if he reveal the torture to anyone.

He had been sick since then and on June 10, Kumaresan developed breathing difficulties and vomitted. He was taken to a private hospital and later shifted to TVMCH, after his health condition worsened. The doctor treating him said Kumaresan suffered severe internal injuries on his kidney, lungs and other organs and asked the cause of injuries. It was only then Kumaresan told us about the police torture, his father said.

It may be recalled that a timber merchant P.Jayaraj (60) and his son J.Benicks (31) died on June 22 and 23 one by one due to police brutality while in custody at Sathankulam police station in Thoothukudi district. The death of father-son duo had sent shock waves across the nation.
