RS OKs NMC Bill 2019; Govt not promoting quackery

New Delhi, Aug 1 (UNI) Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed The National Medical Commission Bill 2019 as amended after Health and Family Welfare minister Harsh Vardhan assured that the Bill will not promote quackery in the country instead it will keep a check on such practices.
NMC is the biggest reforms for medical education in the country. The bill that seeks to repeal the Indian Medical Council Act 1956 was passed by a voice vote, amid a walkout by AIADMK.
The bill provides for setting up a National Medical Commission (NMC) in place of the MCI to develop and regulate all aspects of medical education, profession and institutions in India.
The Minister informed that it will take 3 years to set up the National Medical Commission.
The Minister on his reply stated that the Bill imposed one year imprisonment and Rs 5 lakh fine if found guilty.
On states representation in the NMC, the Minister said the government taking amendment into consideration has increased the representatives of state medical commission from 5 to 9 and similarly state university representatives will be 10 as against 6.
Under the new bill, states can only "advise" the NMC. But the council can choose not to accept those advices.
The Minister on Community Health Providers stated that even the WHO has certified these CHPs and developed countries also takes service of there CHPs
The Lok Sabha on July 29 had passed the National Medical Commission Bill 2019.
