Now TMC(M) leader Vasan bats for prohibition in TN

Chennai, Nov 28(UNI) Taking the cue from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar prohibiting liquor in his state, Tamil Maanila Congress(Moopanar) founder G K Vasan today demanded that the Tamil Nadu government must reintroduce prohibition in the state as former Congress stalwart and Chief Minister K Kamaraj had done. In a statement here today he demanded that the state government must reintroduce prohibition in a phased manner and initiate steps like closind down TASMAC shops step by step not allowing men below the age of 25 to consume liquor. He also suggested that the driving licences of people who drive after consuming liquor must be cancelled. Mr Vasan who was a minister in the previous Congress led UPA government and quit that party after its defeat in the Lok Sabha elections to revive his father's TMC party, said his party had collected the signatures of more than core people in Tamil Nadu demanding prohibition and submitted it to the Governor."Even people especially womenfolk in small villages have signed demanding prohibition", he pointed out. Mr Vasan said during the Kamaraj rule only two states in the country, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat implemented the prohibition policy. Now only Gujarat government was implementing the policy, he pointed out, adding now the Bihar Chief Minister has decided to implement it. He said reintroduction of prohibition in Tamil Nadu was crucial from the view point of welfare of women. "Drink only destroys the life of women and devastates the health of men. Besides, women are the eyes of the country it is said", Mr Vasan observed in a bid to highlight the necessity of reintroducing prohibition in the state. It may be recalled that the two main Dravidian parties, the ruling AIADMK and the DMK which had first defeated the Congress government in Tamil Nadu in 1967 ushering in the Dravidian party rule in the state, have been shifting their stand on prohibition policy in Tamil Nadu. But the present opposition parties DMK, Congress, PMK, MDMK, DMDK, CPI, CPI(M) and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi(VCK) have been vociferously demanding reintroduction of prohibition in Tamil Nadu and have staged agitations. The DMK , which was voted out of power in the state in 2011 elections, has declared that the first task it would fulfil if it is voted back to power in the 2016 Assembly elections is introducing total prohibition.
