New Delhi, Jan 23 (UNI) President Ram Nath Kovind has lauded the Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad University in Vadodara for institutionalising fellowships for students from economically weaker sections.
Addressing the 66th Convocation of the University on Monday he noted that contributions of students of this University towards development of those from deprived and underprivileged background would be consistent with the ideals of Sayajirao.
``Sayajirao had founded the University to promote quality higher education in the region and had supported and encouraged talented people from the underprivileged sections of society, including Dr B.R. Ambedkar. At the time there were very few people with such an expansive vision,’’ he said.
The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, set up in 1949, is one of the oldest centres of learning in western India.
Later the President participated in the 150th anniversary of Akshar Deri at Gondal and appreciated the humanitarian work of the Swaminarayan Sanstha.
