Work is going on fast on more than 100 new medical colleges: PM

Jaipur/New Delhi, Sep 30 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that in the past 6-7 years, more than 170 new medical colleges have been set up in the country and work is going on fast on more than 100 new medical colleges.
Speaking after virtually inaugurating CIPET: Institute of Petrochemicals Technology, Jaipur and laying the foundation stone for four new medical colleges in Banswara, Sirohi, Hanumangarh and Dausa districts of Rajasthan, the Prime Minister said India is moving beyond 6 AIIMS towards having a strong network of more than 22 AIIMS in the country.
'In the year 2014, the total seats of medical undergraduate and post graduate in the country were close to 82,000. Today their number has increased to 1,40,000 seats,' the Prime Minister said.
'The biggest pandemic of the last 100 years has taught a lot to the health sector of the world. Every country is engaged in dealing with this crisis in its own way. India has resolved to increase its strength and self-reliance in this period of pandemic,' he said.
Mentioning about COVID vaccine doses, he said, ' Today, more than 88 crore COVID vaccine doses have been administered in India.'
The four new medical colleges in Banswara, Sirohi, Hanumangarh and Dausa districts of Rajasthan have been sanctioned under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for 'Establishment of new medical colleges attached with district/ referral hospitals'. Preference to set up medical colleges is given to underserved, backward and Aspirational Districts.
Under three phases of the scheme, 157 new medical colleges have been approved across the nation. Together with the Government of Rajasthan, the Government of India has established CIPET: Institute of Petrochemicals Technology, Jaipur. It is self-sustainable and dedicatedly serves the needs of the petrochemical and allied industries. It will provide education to the youth to become skilled technical professionals.
