New Delhi, Nov 29 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held talks with the visiting Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
"A new chapter in our 2,500 years old intertwined history," tweeted MEA spokesman Raveesh Kumar.
The visiting dignitary paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat while he was also given a 21 gun salute at the Rashtrapati Bhawan premises.
In a missive in the micro blogging site, Prime Minister said he was "happy to receive" the Sri Lankan President on his first overseas visit in the official capacity.
"His visit is a testimony to the time-tested ties between India and Sri Lanka and will help strengthen our bonds as well as energise our partnership," the Prime Minister wrote.
The Sri Lankan President will call on President Ram Nath Kovind as well.
Mr Rajapaksa is here on a three-day state visit to India.
Before his departure from Colombo, he tweeted that during the visit, he is looking forward to strengthening bilateral relations with India.
