NHRC pulls up Delhi Metro, asks to remove misleading signages from Transgenders' toilets

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) A notice is served to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to remove "misleading" signages to identify 347 new toilets it built for transgender persons, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), said on Friday.
The human rights body said that the symbolic photo along with the term used on the toilets are not an acceptable portrayal of the transgender community and fail to prevent the discrimination they face.
"Allegedly, the name ‘Ubhayalingi’ with a symbolic photo of ‘half-male and half-female’ outside the new 347 Transgender friendly toilets, constructed by the DMRC at metro stations, is not the acceptable term for Transgender persons. The signage fails to provide a safe space and prevent gender discrimination that the DMRC intended," it said.
