Supreme Court to hear Krishan Janam Bhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute from August 5 onwards

New Delhi, Apr 15 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday deferred the hearing on a batch of petitions challenging the Allahabad High Court order about the Krishan Janam Bhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute.
A bench comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Dutt posted the matter to August 5, 2024.
The bench was hearing the special leave petitions filed by the Management Committee of the Shahi Eidgah Mosque, Mathura, and the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board challenging a May 2023 order of the Allahabad High Court which had transferred to itself a batch of petitions over the land dispute.
The Supreme Court also deferred the hearing of another SLP filed by the Mosque Committee challenging the order passed by the Allahabad High Court in December 2023, allowing a court commissioner to inspect the Shahi Idgah Mosque.
Advocate Tasneem Ahmadi appeared for the Mosque Committee and Senior Advocate Shyam Divan appeared for the plaintiffs.
The Supreme Court had on January 16, stayed the implementation of the Allahabad High Court order by which it appointed the commission to inspect the Mosque.
The Supreme Court on Monday clarified that the interim order will continue to operate till the next date of hearing and also it has not stayed the proceedings in the suits pending in the High Court.
The matter pertains to a controversy related to the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb-era Shahi Idgah mosque at Mathura, which is alleged to have been built after demolishing a temple at the birthplace of Lord Krishna.
The matter will come up for a hearing on August 5, 2024.
