New Delhi, Jul 18 (UNI) Remembering former South African President Nelson Mandela, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that his struggles, values and message of peace will continue to be a source of inspiration for people around the globe.
Taking to twitter, he said “On Nelson Mandela International Day, let us remember a legend who fought for social justice, freedom and equality till the last breath of his life”.
Recognising the contribution of Nelson Mndela’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom, the United Nations General Assembly declares July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day since 2009.
Mr Mandela was the South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He spent around 27 years in prison while struggling against apartheid in the South Africa.
He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by tackling institutionalised racism and fostering racial reconciliation. Ideologically an African nationalist and socialist, he served as the president of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997.
