Mizoram civil societies urge Myanmar refugees to respect Indian laws and social norms

Aizawl, Apr 25 (UNI) Tens of thousands of Myanmar refugees, who have found shelter in Mizoram, are being urged to adhere to Indian laws and local customs by civil societies and student organizations within the state, which had previously provided assistance in the form of shelter, food, medicine, and other necessities.
The central committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) and Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the apex Mizo student body, recently issued a call to the refugees to respect Indian laws and the practices of the local community. This pressure came amidst concerns over increasing drug trafficking from Myanmar, with some refugees allegedly involved in such illicit activities and crimes affecting both Mizoram and Myanmar citizens.
In a statement issued last week, the central committee of the YMA appealed to refugees from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and internally displaced individuals from Manipur taking shelter in Mizoram to abide by Indian laws and integrate into the societal norms of the state. They emphasized the importance of refraining from breaking local laws or engaging in clandestine drug trafficking, urging them to be exemplary citizens during their stay.
