Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay to quit judicial service, join politics

Kolkata, Mar 3 (UNI) Calcutta High Court sitting judge Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay on Sunday said he would quit the judicial service and join politics.
In an exclusive interview with a private Bengali news channel, Justice Gangopadhyay announced he would resign as judge on Tuesday.
Justice Gangopadhyay said he would enter an area where he could serve a larger section of the society than the legal profession in the courts only.
.
"I have served six years now as a judge and now nothing here is left for me and therefore I would resign from my post on Tuesday ( March 4 )," he said.
"I will join politics but have not decided which party I may fit into," said the sitting judge, who is to retire from service in about five months.
Justice Gangopadhyay thanked the ruling party of the state for repeatedly challenging him to enter the political arena. "That journey begins on Tuesday," the judge said.
Replying to a question on whether he would be in the Lok Sabha poll race, as the announcement comes at a time when the elections are due in a few months, the judge said he was not in a position to say anything on the issue.
"If any political party invites me and asks to contest the Lok Sabha poll in that case I would take a call," Justice Gangopadhyay said. UNI PC BD SSP
