Kolkata, Nov 16 (UNI) The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday reconstituted CBI's Special Investigation Team (SIT) owing to "tardy progress" in the probe into alleged fraudulent appointments of 542 teachers of Group C and Group D of the government-aided schools across West Bengal.
Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay while expressing dissatisfaction with the progress of the probe, ordered the reconstitution of SIT appointing IPS Akhilesh Singh, (DIG), to head the new team and included four additional CBI officials while relieving two officials of the existing SIT team, advocate Firdoush Shamim, who appeared for the deprived candidates, said.
The single bench judge said the court-monitored probe would be headed by Akhilesh Singh and he should be drafted into the CBI Kolkata office within seven days.
The judge also ordered that Akhilesh should not be transferred from the case.
Akhilesh Singh, who was earlier in Kolkata, was now working elsewhere in the CBI.
The four additional CBI officers in the reconstituted team are deputy SP Angshuman Saha, and Inspectors Biswanath Chakraborty, Pradip Tripathy, and Wasim Akram Khan. Sources said the court named the new SIT officials after the federal agency provided details of its available officials.
The two officers relieved were KC Rishinamul and Imran Ashik.
The reconstitution of SIT happened after the court came to know that CBI in the last five months only interviewed or questioned 16 former teachers of the 542, who had been appointed fraudulently.
The court in May ordered the dismissal of all 542 teachers in Group C and Group D and asked the CBI to enquire how they got the job in the government-aided schools. The same court also had set up the SIT of CBI to expedite the probe in June.
The judge on Tuesday had summoned the chief of the CBI’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged recruitment scam to appear before it at 2 pm on Wednesday with documents related to the case.
Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay sought to know how many candidates have got appointment letters fraudulently and the total count of people who had submitted blank papers yet got appointment letters.
He also wanted to know why non-deserving appointed candidates have not yet resigned. On Tuesday, the Judge asked the CBI for a list of such teachers. At the same time, Justice Gangopadhyay said, “If those who got jobs by submitting blank papers do not resign, the court will take action.”
