TMC MLA & Asansol mayor Jitendra Tiwari tests Covid-19 positive, Toll in Bengal rises to 3,887

Kolkata, Sep 13 (UNI) Ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from Pandaveswar and
Asansol mayor Jitendra Tiwari have tested Covid-19 positive along with two of his aides
to become part of the 3,161 new cases detected in the last 24-hours.
The Mayor said, "I am in home isolation after receiving the news of the attack."
It is learnt that two others, known to be close to the Mayor, have been infected. They
are also in home isolation.
Tiwari was a part of the 45-minute session in the Assembly on Wednesday, where
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was present along with many in her Cabinet and
hundreds of Legislators, staff members and journalists.
The MLA is among over 20 sitting members of the Assembly who have so far been
infected with Covid-19, half from the ruling party.
The pandemic infected at least four members of the Bengal State Cabinet, including
ministers Jyotipriya Mullick, Sujit Bose, Swapan Debnath and Soumen Mahapatra.
The pathogen also claimed the lives of CPI(M) veteran and former transport minister
Shyamal Chakraborty, Trinamul’s Egra MLA Samaresh Das and Falta MLA Tamonash
Ghosh.
Meanwhile, the COVID-19 toll in Bengal rose to 3,887 on Saturday with the death of
59 persons on Saturday, while the tally touched 1,99,493 with 3,161 new confirmed
cases.
According to the latest State Government Health bulletin, the active cases accounted
for 23,521, while the number of discharged cases stood at 1,72,085.
The percentage of discharged rose to 86.26 per cent.
The bulletin said the total number of samples tested stood at 24,22,740 with 47,131
tested till yesterday.
While the city recorded the highest number of 1461 deaths so far, surrounding districts
of North 24 Parganas and Howrah came second and third respectively with 876 and 449
fatalities.
South 24 Parganas accounted for 247 deaths, the toll in Hooghly stood at 168,
Darjeeling 91, Paschim and Purba Midnapore 78 and 84 respectively, Malda 47,
Murshidabad 52, Nadia 63, Paschim Bardhaman 44, Purba Bardhaman 25, Jalpaiguri 39,
Uttar Dinajpur 27, Dakshin Dinajpur 29, Birbhum 20, Alipurduar 27, Kalimpong 3,
CoochBehar 20, Purulia 6, Jhargram 2 and Bankura 26.
