Meghalaya: Cong rakes up Christian issue, BJP retorts

Shillong, Mar 22 (UNI) In the run-up to the parliamentary elections in Christian-majority Meghalaya, the Congress on Friday raked up the Christian issue by accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and another regional party, Voice of the People Party (VPP), of being insulting towards church elders, in the wake of which the saffron party has denounced the sitting MP Vincent Pala, who is seeking re-election from the Shillong Lok Sabha seat, for mouthing misinformation.
Terming the Congress leader’s recent statements on the BJP as uncalled for and a misinformation campaign, the Meghalaya State BJP demanded that the sitting MP either give one specific instance of disrespect to the Church by India’s ruling party or retract the statement immediately.
The state unit of the BJP pointed to the various instances when the Prime Minister himself paid homage to the church and the pro-Christian activities carried out by various state leaders of the party. The party sought to remind Pala that during a pre-Christmas event organised at the Prime Minister’s residence, Narendra Modi had lavished unparalleled praise on Jesus Christ and his teachings.
