As govt gives Clause 6 report under wraps, AASU makes it public

Guwahati, Aug 11 (UNI) More than five months after the government kept under wraps the report of a ‘Committee on Implementation of Clause 6 of Assam Accord’, which deals with ‘constitutional safeguards’ for the people of Assam, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) today made the document public, questioning the government’s reluctance to inform on the status of the report.
Terming Indian citizens residing in Assam on or before January 1, 1951 as ‘Assamese people’ for the purpose of implementing Clause 6, reservation of seats in Parliament, Assembly and local bodies, introduction of Inner Line Permit (ILP), reservation in government jobs, issues relating to land and land rights, linguistic, social and cultural rights, and protection of resources and biodiversity are some of the key recommendations in the Report.
Addressing a press conference, AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya said, “We have been forced to go public with the Report as the people have been questioning us and they have the right to know it. We waited five months for the government to act, but there was nothing from their side.”
