Assam flood toll at 62; Governor visits affected areas

Guwahati, Jul 20 (UNI) Even though the overall flood situation in Assam continued
to improve, the death toll has been mounting with 12 deaths in last 24 hours taking
the total count to 62 so far.
Out of the 12 casualties since yesterday, five were reported from Morigaon district
and three from Barpeta, taking the total toll to 62, including two in landslides.
The overall situation improved marginally with 24 districts still under water.
Over 44 lakh people were still affected by the floods, with 1.31 lakh people taking
shelter in 689 relief camps.
Among the major rivers still flowing over the danger level are Brahmaputra at
Neamatighat (Jorhat), Goalpara and Dhubri; Dhansiri (S) at Numaligarh (Golaghat)
and Kopili at Dharamtul (Nagaon).
Meanwhile, Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi today made an aerial survey of Kamrup,
Goalpara, South Salmara and Dhubri districts.
Several senior officials, including the Commissioner, Lower Assam Division, and the
Additional Secretary, Revenue and DM Department, accompanied him.
He met camp inmates of three Relief Camps in Gouripur and Dhubri and instructed
District officials to render all possible help to the flood affected people.
