Nokia Mobile Broadband Index: 5G data consumption surges, major shifts expected by 2030

New Delhi, Mar 20 (UNI) Nokia's annual Mobile Broadband Index (MBiT) report for the Indian market has unveiled significant trends in mobile data consumption, particularly with the advent of 5G technology.
Since its launch in October 2022, 5G users in India have been consuming approximately 3.6 times more data compared to 4G users, marking a substantial shift in the mobile data landscape.

In 2023 alone, mobile data traffic in India reached a staggering 17.4 exabytes (EB) per month, showcasing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26 percent over the past five years. The launch of 5G has been a pivotal factor, contributing to 15 percent of all data traffic last year.

The report highlights that 5G traffic has seen significant growth across all telecom circles, particularly in metro circles, which accounted for 20 percent of the overall mobile data traffic. This growth has been fueled by enhanced 5G availability and performance, the affordability of a wide range of devices, and the introduction of new data-intensive apps and services.

An interesting revelation from the report is that 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is expected to play a crucial role in enabling new services for both homes and businesses. FWA users are projected to consume approximately 2.5 times more data than average 5G users.

Moreover, the ecosystem of 5G devices in India is rapidly evolving, with around 17 percent of active 4G devices now being 5G capable. This amounts to 134 million out of 796 million devices, indicating a growing readiness for 5G adoption among consumers.

Looking towards the future, the Nokia MBiT 2024 report anticipates major technological shifts leading up to 2030. Themes such as the metaverse, AI/ML, cloud computing, and Web 3.0 are expected to shape the digitised and programmable world of tomorrow.

Tarun Chhabra, Head of Mobile Networks Business at Nokia (India), expressed excitement about the findings, stating, "What is immediately obvious is the incredible proliferation of 5G technology across India and the increasing demand for super-fast 5G data speeds. Nokia looks forward to continuing to work hand-in-hand with our operator partners to help them meet customer demand."

As an exabyte is equal to 1,000 petabytes and one petabyte is equal to 1,000 terabytes, the scale of mobile data consumption in India is truly remarkable.
Nokia, as a B2B technology innovation leader, aims to create networks that sense, think, and act, paving the way for secure, reliable, and sustainable networks today and in the future.
