Detailed survey by KRCL on 6.8 km tunnel rekindles hopes of people in 2 Kerala districts

By : K P Pushparaj
Kozhikode, Sep 22 (UNI) The years-long hope for a hassle-free and easy road connectivity between Kozhikode and Wayanad districts got reawakened in the minds of the people of these two districts, being separated by the western ghats, as the officials of the Konkan Rail kicked off their detailed survey on the 6.8 kilometer tunnel linking the two neighbouring districts.
The Wayanad ghat section, better known as `Thamaraerry churam’, along National Highway 212 that connects the two districts, begins at Adivaram near Thamaraserry in Kozhikode and ends at Lakkidi in Wayanad district.
Having nine hairpin bends on the 13-km ghat road section, the traffic on this narrow and landslip-prone road gets crippled quite often due to one or the other reason. Minor landslides and damage of protection walls either blocked or narrowed the roads often.
The tunnel will be the longest road tunnel in the state and the third longest in the country. The official launch of the work of the tunnel will be made by the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on October 5.
Once the project is commissioned, most likely in two years’ time, it would not only save time and make the journey between the districts hassle-free but will also considerably reduce the distance.
The tunnel will facilitate a reduction of nearly 19 kms, from the present 73 kms to 54 kms, between Kalpetta and Calicut.
The officials of the implementing agency, the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), on Tuesday commenced its survey on the 6.8 km tunnel between nearby Anakampoyil and Meppadi in Wayanad, linking Kozhikode and Wayanad districts.
A bridge across Iruvanjippuzha will also be constructed as part of the two-lane tunnel connected highway.
Sanctioned as part of the 100-day special drive by the CPI-M led LDF Government, the much-awaited project of the construction of the tunnel will provide a better and hassle-free alternative link to the present Thamaraserry-Lakkidi ghat road.
KRCL has been appointed as the implementing agency for the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) project.
The tunnel starts at Swargam Kunnu in nearby Kodenchery panchayat in Kozhikode district and will end at Kalladi near Meppadi in Wayanad district.
The state has earmarked Rs.658 crore for the project, through Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).
A 12-member technical team headed by Senior Section Engineer Murali has commenced their work on the land survey and field investigation today.
The team visited among other places Anakampoyil, Maripuzha and Swargamkunnu as part of their survey.
But there is only one prayer for the awaiting thousands who wanted to make use of the tunnel. Let it not be yet another tunnel that is being built in Kuthiran Mala, linking Thrissur and Palakkad. The work on the much-acclaimed tunnel has been at a snail's pace for various reasons.
