IGBC Targets all buildings to become Net Zero by 2050

Kolkata, Nov 18 (UNI) Green Building Congress 2021, India’s flagship event on Green Buildings
and Built Environment was inaugurated by Alex Ellis, British High Commissioner to India.
CII’s Indian Green Building Council is hosting the 19th edition of ‘Green Building Congress’ on November 18, 19 & 20. The 3-day conference is being held virtually on CII HIVE platform. The
theme for Green Building Congress 2021 is ‘Net Zero Buildings & Built Environment’.
Delivering his address during Green Building Congress 2021, Mr Alex Ellis said, “The COP26 Conference at Glasgow was momentous, as it sets the world to the path of Net Zero. Over 90%
of world’s economies are now covered by Net Zero Pledges. The discussion is no longer on ‘if’ countries should be Net Zero, the question is by ‘when’ and ‘how’ will be they be Net Zero."
"Climate change is amongst the five pillars of the India-UK 2030 Roadmap agreed by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Boris Johnson in May this year. As part of the Climate Change Roadmap, the govt of UK will invest in Green Projects & Renewable Energy in India,
encourage British businesses to collaborate with Indian Counterparts to work on sustainability
projects, carry out publicly funded research & development programmes etc. The UK government
will continue to work together with Govt of India in providing sustainable and viable solutions to
Climate Change”.
The conference was also graced with the presence of Jayant Sinha, Member of Parliament
Former Union Minister of State for Finance & Minister of State for Civil Aviation.
Sharing his views during the conference Mr Sinha said “Keeping the 1.5 Degrees of Global
warming in reach is vital as any global warming beyond 1.5 Degree would lead to irreversible environmental damages."
"To achieve India’s commitment to become Net Zero by 2070, we need to make urgent transitional changes in the fuel used for power generation, The power Generation should be completely switched over to Renewable source, the transportation & mobility must switch over to electric and other low emitting fuels, Green Hydrogen for Industrial applications should be encouraged in a large way and importantly Carbon Pricing and fossil fuel taxing is vital as it will lead to fiscal transition from fossil
fuel”.
Once this market transition takes place on a large scale, the Net Zero will actually lead to a Net Positive Impact for India as greener India will lead to more job creation and a much higher GDP”
Sharing his views on the conference Jamshyd Godrej, Past President CII said “Green Buildings
are a huge opportunity to slow down a rapidly warming earth. Action by businesses to promote and
use green buildings will be a competitive advantage for decades. The Green Building Congress has always been a platform to facilitate advancing green building movement in the country”
Sharing his views on the occasion, V Suresh, Chairman IGBC, said “The Green Building Movement in India is growing from strength to strength. The Green Building Congress 2021 is India’s flagship
event on Green Buildings and Green Built Environment. Given the global focus on Climate change
and India’s commitment at COP 26, the theme of the event has been aptly selected to address Net
Zero buildings & built environment.

that showcases the latest green building technologies, green products and services.
