Animation industry offers number of varied career opportunities for various professionals: Rohan Ponniah

Panaji, Nov 3 (UNI) Rohan Ponniah, Co-Founder and Partner, Fat Hamster Studio, an animation powerhouse with a global presence in multiple markets in India, Africa, Middle East, Europe and the US, has said that animation industry offers number of varied career oportunities for various professionals.
Speaking to UNI, Zambia-returned Rohan Ponniah, who has founded the company along with Goa-born Vesley Carrasco, said the concept of the company was first discussed over some drinks at Mojo and that was where the idea germinated.
''Vesley and I have been friends and colleagues over the past years. One evening we were at Mojos catching up with a friend and got talking about starting this augmented and virtual reality studio. Over the next few months we worked together on setting it up and now a few years later, we are a team of 15 working on some very interesting projects for clients from across geographies. We brainstormed for days on end to come up with an interesting name for the company. Incidentally, the names included the mention of an animal. Finally, we settled on Fat Hamster Studio as we liked the sound of it. My business partner and the co-founder of Fat hamster Studio, Vesley Carrasco is from Goa and was keen to set shop here. I lived most of my early life in Zambia before moving back to India,'' he said.
He said there was a constant need of artists, engineers, coders, illustrators, animators, project managers, 3D artists, graphic designers and a host of other professions which would constantly be in demand in the future, given the integration of technology in all spheres of business.
''As technology gets integrated even more across industries, there are a number of professions which will become redundant in the future. Training Managers and Quality content supervisors for example may reduce. While creative and planning training modules are certainly required, companies are often opting for training videos to be created which can be played out to new batches of recruits. Conducting the same training time and again by a training manager can cause fatigue for the trainer as well,'' he said.
When asked what was the training or aptitude required to take up AR and VR as a vocation, Rohan said,'' The students that pass out of institutes in Goa such as the engineering institutes and the college of arts have a sound knowledge of theory and the fundamentals of the subject but lack the practical know-how, especially creative problem-solving techniques. As individuals we are tuned to do something in a particular way. However, there are multiple options or solutions to a single problem. Once they come onboard, we train new candidates and help them skill themselves to be employment ready.''
On how should academic and tech institutions groom students especially in schools and college to prepare for a future with animation, AR and VR and what were the skill upgrades which need to be done at that level, he said,''Yes. With the world rapidly making advances in technology, it would be important to commence some form of training at the school level. Kids are fast learners and can pick up new skills quickly. In some schools, coding is already a subject being taught. Kids are learning to code games and work on designs at an early age. Technology is growing and evolving rapidly and it's good for educational institutes to adapt with the time. Many of them are already on track.''
