Narayanganj killings: 26, including Awami League leader and RAB officials, awarded death sentence

Dhaka, Jan 16 (UNI) A Bangladesh court today awarded death sentences to 26 people, including the prime accused Nur Hossain- a leader from Awami League, Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Major Arif Hossain and Lt Commander MM Rana from Rapid Action Battalion (RAB); involved in sensational Narayanganj killings in 2014 which rocked the nation and led to mass outrage, according to media reports. On 27 April 2014, seven people, including the mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar, were abducted from outside a cricket stadium in Narayanganj. Their bodies were found floating in River Shitalakkhya three days later, the news of which led to mass unrest and violence in Bangladesh. Police during investigation found the Awami League leader Nur Hossain prime accused for plotting the murder. A charge sheet filed by the police alleged Nur Hossain had bribed Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officials to kill Nazrul Islam and the others. Both Nazrul and Nur belonged to Awami League and political rivalry was said to be the reason behind the killings. After the registration of an FIR, Nur Hossain trespassed the Bangladesh border and hid in Kolkata. He was brought back by the Dhaka police on November 12, 2015 ,for the trial. The police charge sheeted a total of 35 accused in Narayanganj killings. After a year-long trial, Sessions Judge Sayed Enayet Hossain of Narayanganj found all the 35 accused guilty and pronounced the sentence today amid tight security. Out of the 35 accused, 26 had been awarded death penalty which include three RAD officIals and a leader from Awami League. UNI XC PS RP1700
