Namibia ready to supply uranium to India; Prez Geingob tells Pranab will find legal way out to overcome NPT bars

Windhoek, Jun 16 (UNI) Namibia today expressed its strong intent to sort out the problems that were coming into the way of implementation of the 2009 agreement for supply of uranium to India as the latter being not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. Namibina President Hage G Geingob today, in his formal talks with visiting President Pranab Mukherjee, also said that Indian companies could come in for mining uranium, Secretary Economic Relations in the Ministry of External Affairs Amar Sinha said at a media briefing on today’s talks. The offer from Namibia, which is the fourth largest producer of uranium, would greatly help India to increase the component of nuclear power in its energy mix, provided the legal hitches were removed. The keenness of the South African nation in honouring the commitment of 2009 agreement was also strongly expressed by President Geingob during his speech given at Banquet he hosted in honour of President Mukherjee tonight. "We will have to look into the legal ways to sell our uranium to India," President Geingob said in his Banquet speech wondering why his country should not have control over its resources. He called for an end to "nuclear apartheid." At present Namibia, due to its affiliation with a regional nuclear non-proliferation regimes, the Pelindaba Treaty, and reservations of the African Union, is not being able to supply uranium to India. The Namibian parliament has not ratified the 2009 agreement with India due to these concerns on proliferation. Pelindaba treaty prohibits nuclear trade with countries which have not signed the Nuclear non-proliferation treaty. There are a total of 12 countries with whom India has entered into agreement for the supply of nuclear fuel. These include Australia, Sri lanka, Argentina , Russia, Japan, Canada, South Korea, France etc. "They are wiling to engage with India on this issue. We will explain to them why NPT should not be a hinderance,’’ Mr Sinha said. President Geingbo said that he would study the issue to see how the hitches could be removed. India will soon be sending its technical team to Namibia to explain how the nuclear fuel supply trade still could take place with India as it had happened in the case of several other treaties without any compromise on concern over nuclear proliferation.
