Mysuru district seeks relaxation of model code of conduct due to Dasara festival

Mysuru, Sep 22 (UNI) The Mysuru district administration has sought relaxation from the election Model Code of Conduct (MCC) to celebrate Dasara festival, except in Hunsur Assembly segment, which goes for the Assembly by-election on October 21.
Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G Sankar told Assembly on Saturday night that as per the Election Commission, the MCC is applicable for the entire district, including the city.
The DC has written a letter to the State Election commission, seeking a clarification and also for relaxation of MCC, ahead of Dasara, which has a traditional and cultural significance.
Mr Sankar said, 'At present, no minister or people’s representative is allowed to conduct official meetings. They are not allowed to use official vehicles in the district. However, the representatives can participate in the events. But, no political activity is allowed.'

Meanwhile, with the announcement of by-elections to 15 Assembly seats in Karnataka by the Election Commission on Saturday, the model code of conduct has come into force in as many as 11 districts, including Bengaluru.
However, the Election Commission has exempted the forthcoming Dasara festivities and flood relief work across the North Karnataka region from the code of conduct.
There have been instances where candidates ask for special permission to observe Dasara festivities and this time as well they will be given the permission. No festival or celebration that is held every year will be stopped.
But only political participation is banned, Sanjeev Kumar, State Election Commissioner clarified in Bengaluru on Saturday night.
