Mehbooba meets Army top brass over security situation in Kashmir

Srinagar, Apr 25 (UNI) In the backdrop of the protests by students in the Kashmir Valley over a week, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today met top brass of Army, State police and other security agencies and discussed the security situation in Kashmir. Ms Mehbooba, who had chaired a Unified Command meeting here today, reviewed the security situation in the Valley, where student unrest and attack on families of policemen and ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders have witnessed the spurt of attacks in which nine civilians were killed and over a hundred injured in security force and police actions on April 9, when polling was held in Srinagar Parliamentary constituency. The Unified Command is the apex decision-making body on security affairs in the State which has the representation from the Army, paramilitary forces, police and intelligence agencies. The meeting was chaired a day after the Chief Minister met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi and discussed with them the prevailing situation in the Valley. The meeting also assumes significance as it took place at a time when social media was being used to upload alleged atrocities by Army and other security agencies and students are clashing with security forces in the Valley, where attack on families of cops and political parties has witnessed increase. The authorities have already suspended mobile internet service as a precautionary measure to prevent rumours on April 17, two day after security forces entered Degree College Pulwama and allegedly thrashed the students, including girls. The incident triggered massive protests by students across the Valley, demanding action against the security forces. UNI ABS YSS SDR SNU 1553
