Mathews' ton lifts Sri Lanka to 264-7, Bumrah claims three wickets

Leeds, Jul 6 (UNI) A superb knock by Angelo Mathews 113 off 128, guided Sri Lanka to a total of 264-7 in 50 overs against India in the World Cup match at the Headingley here on Saturday.
Sri Lanka lost their top four batsmen inside the first 12 overs but Thirimanne and Mathews stitched a partnership of 124-runs to help Sri Lanka post a fighting total.
After opting to bat, Sri Lanka were off to a bad start as they lost Karunaratne in the 4th over.
Bumrah dismissed opener Dimuth Karunaratne (10 off 17) to claim his 100th ODI wicket in his 57th ODI. He became the the second-fastest Indian bowler to achieve the landmark after Mohammad Shami who got the mark in 56 matches.
Bumrah is followed by Irfan Pathan (59 matches), Zaheer Khan (65 matches), Ajit Agarkar (67 matches) and Javagal Srinath (68 matches).
After Karunaratne's wicket, Avishka Fernando, centurion from Sri Lanka's last match joined Perera. Meanwhile, Bumrah continued his dream spell and struck again to remove Kusal Perera (18 off 14) leaving Sri Lanka at 40/2 in 7.1 overs.
Playing his first match of the World Cup, Ravindra Jadeja struck in his first over to remove Kusal Mendis.
Hardik Pandya too participated in the attack on Sri Lankan batsmen and he got the big wicket of in-form Avishka Fernando to put Sri Lanka on the backfoot at 54/4.
After losing their top 4 inside the first 12 overs, Sri Lanka were in deep trouble but the two most experienced campaigners Angleo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne took the responsibility on their shoulders and batted sensibly.
The duo of Mathews-Thirimanne took their time and rebuilt the innings and help Sri Lanka go past the 100-run mark in the 25th over.
Angelo Mathews showed great maturity and led Sri Lanka from a problematic situation to better one, completing his 39th ODI fifty.
On the other hand, Lahiru Thirimanne too looked in fine touch and gave the needed support to Mathews scoring his 21st ODI fifty.
However, soon after his fifty, Kuldeep Yadav got rid of Lahiru Thirimanne for 53 (68 balls) to break a solid 124-run stand for the fifth wicket leaving Sri Lanka at 179-5 in 37.5 overs.
Once Thirimanne got out, Mathews took on the Indian bowlers and accelerated the flow of runs as Sri Lanka cross the 200 mark in the 40th over. Meanwhile, Mathews completed his 3rd ODI hundred, all of which he scored against India.
In slog overs, Mathews targeted Bhuvneshwar Kumar for some quick runs who had an off day with the ball and never looked to threaten the Lankan batsman.
In the end, Bumrah bowled a brilliant delivery to got rid of Angelo Mathews who played a superb knock of 113 runs off 128 balls.
