Kolkata, Feb 21 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday
condoled the death of the people, who were killed in the devastating fire in Bangladesh.
“Saddened to hear about the tragic loss of lives because of the devastating fire in
Bangladesh. My heartfelt condolences to the grieving families,” Ms Banerjee posted
on her social networking page.
“We wish the injured a speedy recovery,” she added.
At least 69 people have been killed and scores injured in a fire that ripped through
a building also used as chemical warehouses in Dhaka, a fire official said today.
"We have so far recovered the bodies of 69 people," Mahfuz Riven, a duty officer
of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, said.
The fire broke out last night at around 2240 hrs at a chemical warehouse on the
ground floor of the five-storey Hazi Wahed Mansion and subsequently tore through
four other buildings, trapping dozens of people inside, the fire officials said.
The flames then quickly spread through three other buildings nearby, including a
community centre, said Ali Ahmed, director general of Fire Service and Civil Defence,
Thirty-seven units of firefighters from 13 fire stations brought the fire under control
around 0300 hrs.
