New Delhi, Sep 14 (UNI) Targetting the Election Commission over Delhi Election Commission's clarification that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used in Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) polls were not procured from the Commission, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said that the statement ran contrary to EC's claim that no one can manufacture or buy or sell EVMs privately.
“From where can you procure EVMs privately? Doesn’t ECI claim that no one can manufacture or buy or sell EVMs privately? Isn’t anyone found in possession of EVMs without EC’s permission guilty of criminal offence?,” the CM tweeted.
Following news reports of ‘faulty EVMs’ during counting of votes of DUSU polls, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi on Thursday issued a statement that the EVMs in question were not of Election Commission as no such EVMs were allotted/issued to the varsity.
It also observed that Delhi University (DU) had procured these machines privately.
On Thursday, counting for DUSU polls was postponed for a few hours following uproar by the Congress student wing National Students' Union of India (NSUI) alleging malfunctioning of EVMs. Later in the evening, the counting was resumed and the results were announced.
