Kaifiyat express derails in UP, 74 injured

Auriyya, Aug 23 (UNI) Around 74 passengers were injured, four of them critically, when Delhi-bound Kaifiyat express train derailed after hitting a loader between Pata and Achalada stations on the busy Kanpur-Delhi grand trunk route under North-Central railway today. UP Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar told UNI that Kaifiyat express, train number 12225, derailed after a loader HR63 B 9175 carrying sand for track work on dedicated freight corridor overturned on the tracks and the rushing train collided with it. NDRF team was sent from Lucknow but the rescue operation ended before they arrived. Mr Kumar said that 74 people have received injures. Two of the critically injured were shifted to Saifai while the other two to Etawah. Both the train drivers received head injury. No casualty has been reported so far. Auriyya Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Tyagi, who is camping on the spot and supervising the relief and rescue operation, said that the loader overturned on the track and the rushing train collided with it at around 0240 hrs. Altogether eight coaches and the engine of the train have derailed. The driver of the train told a TV news channel that even though he got a green signal, still there was a loader on the track. After seeing the loader on the track, emergency brakes were applied, which led to the derailment, he added. The driver of the loader had fled the spot. Two derailed coaches have overturned, blocking both the parallel tracks. All the trains going towards Delhi on the same route have been detained at different stations. This was the second major train accident in Uttar Pradesh within five days after 24 passengers were killed in the Kalinga Utkal Express near Khatauli station in Muzaffarnagar district on August 19.
