Japan PM meets Iran's Zarif, voices hope for continued implementation of JCPOA

Tokyo, May 16 (UNI) Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif on Thursday at his residence in Tokyo and expressed his hope for the continued implementation of the Iran nuclear deal, reaffirming that Japan would maintain and develop friendly relations with Tehran, Japanese media reported.
Zarif began his visit to Japan on Wednesday. He met with his Japanese counterpart, Taro Kono, earlier in the day, who urged Iran to preserve the nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), amid media reports that Tehran had officially discontinued some of its commitments under the agreement.
"I am concerned about the mounting tension in the Middle East. I want to have a frank discussion to support the region’s stability. Japan and Iran have traditionally had a friendly relationship. We would like to maintain and develop that relationship," Abe said at the beginning of the meeting, as quoted by the NHK broadcaster.
The Iranian top diplomat, in response, noted the importance of having a dialogue with Tokyo.
"My country is in a good relationship with Japan and views it as an important partner, and it is extremely important. That is why it is necessary under the current situation to exchange views and consult with leader and the government of Japan," Zarif said.
Iran announced its JCPOA decision last week, giving European counties 60 days to renegotiate the agreement.
This development came a year after the United States made its own decision to leave the multilateral deal. The move was met with condemnation from China, France, Germany, Iran, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union — the other signatories to the Iran nuclear deal — which said that the withdrawal and subsequent reinstatement of sanctions on Tehran threatened not only Iran but also countries and companies that continued to do business with the country.
