New Delhi, May 4 (UNI) In a major feat, the Indian Embassy in Sudan evacuated to safety 80 Indians from El Fashir, in western Sudan, to the Port Sudan, located at a distance of 1,800 km, ferrying them in two buses for more than 48 hours amid the ongoing fighting.
So far, India has safely evacuated 3,584 Indians from Sudan, with the Indian Embassy mobilising 67 buses from various parts of Sudan to reach Port Sudan.
Indian deployed five Indian Naval Ships and 16 Indian Air Force aircrafts including one from Wadi Sayyidna military airbase for the Operation Kaveri.
In tweets, the Indian Embassy, which is now temporarily located in the Port of Sudan due to the fighting in Khartoum, said:
“9th day of Operation Kaveri,
“One of the most herculean tasks of bringing Indians stranded in El Fashir was achieved today. Indian Embassy mobilized its resources and coordinated with various stake holders in conflict zones to ensure safe travel for its citizens over an arduous journey of over 1800 km.
"Two buses from El Fashir in Western Sudan carrying 80 Indians reached Port Sudan (East of Sudan) safely after travelling for more than 48 hours. We would like to acknowledge the resilience shown by the members of the Indian community who endured this challenging journey.
“As on today 3584 Indians have been evacuated from Sudan. Embassy of India mobilized and facilitated movement of 67 buses from various parts of Sudan to reach Port Sudan.
“So far Indians have moved out of Port Sudan using 5 Indian Naval Ships and 16 Indian Air Force aircrafts including one from Wadi Sayyidna military airbase,” it said.
Earlier, the MEA tweeted that a special flight carrying 192 passengers, including from Nepal, is headed for India.
“A special flight carrying 23rd batch of evacuees departs from Port Sudan.
“IAF C17 aircraft with 192 passengers, including nationals from Nepal is en route to Ahmedabad.”
