India to go with international view on rights of Sri Lankan Tamils:  Govt

New Delhi, Mar 23 (UNI) Expressing its commitment to protect the rights of Sri Lankan Tamils, the Government today said it would go with the international consensus on the proposed resolution on the issue in the United Nations and would not oppose it. In a reply during the Question Hour, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said India is following a policy of persuasion with Sri Lanka, to protect the rights of Tamils. She said the country's efforts to protect the rights of Tamils have achieved success. She informed the House that a report on efforts for rehabilitation of Tamils in Sri Lanka from 2015 to 2017 has been presented in the UN Human Rights Commission. In this connection, a proposal has been moved by Britain, US and other countries to grant more time to Sri Lanka for rehabilitation of Tamils. She said that India would go by the international view of the proposal, which is co-sponsored by Sri Lanka. In the proposal, stress has been laid on the rehabilitation of Sri Lankan Tamils within a stipulated period. She said that on international forums, India has been urging Sri Lanka to fulfill its commitment towards Tamils. UNI AR RJ 2108
