India dismisses US body's report on religious freedom, questions its locus standi
New Delhi, May 3 (UNI) Reacting sharply to a report of US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which alleged rise in intolerance and violations of religious freedom in India, New Delhi today said once again the American establishment had failed to show proper understanding of India, its Constitution and its society. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup, taking exception to the 2016 annual report of the commission, underlined that India is a vibrant pluralistic society founded on strong democratic principles and that its Constitution guarantees fundamental rights to all its citizens, including the right to freedom of religion. "Government does not see the locus standi of a foreign entity like USCIRF to pronounce on the state of Indian citizens' constitutionally protected rights. ''We take no cognisance of their report," Mr Swarup said in a statement issued here. Earlier, the USCIRF alleged that tolerance 'deteriorated' and religious freedom violations 'increased' last year here and suggested that the Indian government must publicly rebuke officials and leaders that make derogatory statements about religious communities. The annual report of the commission further alleged that members of the ruling BJP tacitly supported 'Hindu nationalistic groups' in intimidation, harassment, and violence against minority communities and used religiously divisive language to inflame tensions.
