Illegal migrants: SC refers to constitution bench plea against Section 6A of Citizenship Act

New Delhi, Feb 21(UNI) The Supreme Court today referred to a Constitution bench a writ petition filed by Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha challenging Section 6A of the Citizenship Act. The three-judge bench was headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Jagdish Singh Khehar and also comprised Justices DY Chandrachud and Sanjay Kishan Kaul. The Apex Court was hearing a writ petition filed by Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha challenging Section 6A of the Citizenship Act. The PIL sought quashing of the Section 6A of the Citizenship Act to prevent entry of illegal migrants into the state and the country. The petition, filed by Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha and two other organisations, complained that the impugned provision was discriminatory and unconstitutional in that it permitted entry of foreigners into Assam till March 25, 1971.
