Govt committed to reservations for SCs, STs & OBCs : Govt

New Delhi, Mar 24 (UNI) The Government is committed to reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and the Other Backward Castes (OBCs) , Minister for Social Justice Thawar Chand Gehlot said today. Responding to the concerns expressed by members of the Opposition that the granting a Constitutional status to the Commission for Social and Economically Backwards Classes was a conspiracy to get rid of reservation for the OBCs, Mr Gehlot said, "the Prime Minister has made it clear that reservations for the SCs/STs and the OBCs will continue.’’ He said that the granting of the Constitutional status to the Commission for Socially and Economically Backward Classes was a fulfillment of a long standing demand. Once it gets constitutional status, it will have the power of the Backward Classes and the SC/ST Commission.’’ Earlier, raising the issue, Mr Ram Gopal Yadav of the SP alleged that the granting of the constitutional status to the Commission was a conspiracy to get rid of OBC reservations. He said that he had given a notice under rule 267 for a discussion on the issue. "The MPs belonging to the Backward Castes have been demanding that the Government grant constitutional status to the Backward Classes Commission. However, now the govenrment has constituted a Commission for Socially and Economically Backward Classes. This is a conspiracy to get rid of reservatikons for backwards classes,’’ he said. He was also supported by Mr Ali Anwar Ansari of the JD-U. The reply by the Minister failed to satisfy the members who trooped to the well of the House shouting slogans against the government. Despite the pleas by Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien that the Minister has given an assurance on the matter, the members continued with their uproar, forcing the Chair to adjourn the House for ten minuted, till 1128 hours.
