Gold offer for marriageable girls in Assam Budget

Guwahati, Feb 6 (UNI) In a move that is likely to encourage dowry system, the Assam government today announced of providing one 'tola' gold (about 12 gms) to parents for marriage of their daughters.
The provision has been made under 'Arundhati' scheme, announced as part of 18-point flagship schemes of the state in the annual Budget for 2019-20.
Elaborating on the scheme, state Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma said gifting gold to daughters during marriage is a 'customary ritual which has been part of Assamese society for centuries now'.

Shillong, May 10 (UNI) The Ambassador of France to India, Thierry Mathou in his maiden visit to Meghalaya, visited sacred groves, monoliths, and heritage village of Mawphlang, near Meghalaya’s capital in the East Khasi Hills district on Friday.
The Ambassador trekked for more than 3 kms and visited Mawphlang Sacred Grove in its entirety, where he was guided by the head of Lyngdoh clan of Hima Mawphlang, Tambor Lyngdoh Mawphlang.
