Entertainment » OtherPosted at: Jul 6 2016 11:58AM Fisher-folk stage protest by standing in sea waterRamanathapuram, Tamil Nadu Jul 6 (UNI) Fisher-folk from Pamban Coastal hamlet staged a novel protest by standing in knee-deep sea water demanding the immediate release of 57 fishermen and all the fishing trawlers detained by Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Naval forces detained 57 fishermen, hailing from Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai and Nagapattinam districts after the beginning of new fishing season on May 30. More than 100 Indian mechanized fishing trawlers and dhows (country boats) were also impounded by the Sri Lankan authorities on the alleged charges of cross border fishing. The protesters urged the Centre to take concrete steps to prevent frequent attacks and incarceration of fishermen along with boats by Sri Lanka and to restore traditional fishing rights in Palk Strait.
