New Delhi/Guwahati, Apr 12 (UNI) The Election Commission has registered an FIR against Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for violating Model Code of Conduct by holding a press conference while polling process was on in the state. Deputy Election Commissioner Sandeep Saxena said here that the FIR has been lodged under Rule 126 Representation of People Act . ' Holding a press conference within 48 hours of the poll is violation of the code as it may influence the voters,' he said. Reports from Guwahati said, Mr Gogoi had called a press conference at 1000 hrs yesterday at a city hotel in his capacity as the Congress Legislative Party leader. However, as polling for second and final phase state polls was underway at 0700 hrs, the press conference had come under objection for alleged violation of model code of conduct. The Kamrup (metro) district administration had reportedly sent an additional deputy commissioner to stop the press conference, but Mr Gogoi was adamant and went ahead with the briefing. He reportedly challenged the officials to arrest him if he had violated any rule and claimed the briefing was only to clear his position of certain issues raised against him. Meanwhile, television channels in the state have been asked by the office of the CEO not to telecast any clipping of the press conference addressed by the Chief Minister until further orders.
