Explosion triggers fire in Nigeria, kills 35

Abuja, Sep 11 (UNI) A gas tanker has exploded in north Nigerian state of Nasarawa, leading to a major fire, which took lives of 35 people and left several injured, the state emergency agency said here on Tuesday.
According to a State Emergency Management Agency official, the accident happened at a petrol station along the Lafia-Makurdi road, linking the capital city of Abuja with the northern and southern Nigeria.
SEMA Acting Director Usman Ahmed told the local media that a truck exploded at the point of discharging the gas on Monday.
"We have confirmed 35 dead and over a hundred injured. Most of those that died rushed to the accident spot to see what was happening," Mr Ahmed said.
Nigeria Senate President Bukola Saraki, in a Twitter post, called the explosion 'horrific'. According to Mr Saraki, he met the survivors and offered prayers for the families, who lost their relatives in the incident.
