New Delhi, Feb 22 (UNI) Election Commission on Friday approached Delhi Police to lodge an FIR and investigate the matter of fake news, which was circulating on WhatsApp that NRI voters can cast their votes online in the upcoming polls.
“As follow up action, written to DCP New Delhi District to lodge FIR and investigate the matter of fake news, relating to voting by NRIs using ECI logo, currently in circulation on WhatsApp”, said ECI spokespersons on twitter.
As the fake news spreads in social media, the Commission on Thursday clarified that NRIs cannot votes online.
“It has come to our notice that (the) FAKE NEWS is circulating on some WhatsApp groups. It is clarified that you (NRIs) can only apply for voter registration online through https://nvsp.in/ portal”, it said.
It also pointed out that to cast vote, an Overseas voter may come to their designated polling station with Passport as document for identification.
The Commission had also clarified that if Overseas Indians could vote through online, it needs amendment to the Representation of the Peoples Act.
