EC assesses poll preparedness in Telangana

Hyderabad, Sep 12 (UNI) In the wake of dissolution of Telangana Assembly in the current month, the Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday deputed a seven-member team, headed by Deputy Election Commissioner of India Umesh Sinha, to assess the level of poll preparedness in the state.

The EC team had rounds of talks with the state election and police officials during the last two days in this regard.

Talking to newspersons here, Mr Sinha said on Tuesday and Wednesday, the team had conducted a detailed meeting with the district and state level officials, besides top police officials, to take stock on preparedness for polls in the state.

During the review with political parties, some of them raised the issue of deletion of large number of names from the voter list.
Mr Sinha asked Telangana Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dr Rajat Kumar to take necessary action to include the names, if any deleted from the list, by mistake.
He also asked to take necessary steps to conduct door-to-door campaign and create awareness through the media and social media after publishing the list. He asked the CEO to conduct a surprise check on booth level.

On the issue of seven mandals in Bradrachalam Assembly Constituency, which were transferred from Telangana to Andhra Pradesh, he said the issue was raised by some political parties also. The issue would be brought to the notice of the Chief Election Commissioner.

The EC also conducted the review on availability of EVMs. There are some sensitivity of money, expenditure managements

Asked whether there was any deadline for submitting the report, he said the report would be submitted to the Chief Election Commissioner instantly.

To another question on whether the state machinery was ready to hold elections, he said, "They are gearing up."
