Development initiatives among tribal groups make echo at high UN platform

New Delhi, July 22 (UNI) A Rajasthan-based NGO -- Vaagdhara -- working in the Vaagad tribal belt spread over Banswara, Dungarpur and parts of the adjoining districts, has lauded the good work for sustainable development being done by indigenous tribal groups of the western part of the country, at the high UN platform in New York.
NGO secretary Jayesh Joshi, who has extensively worked among tribal congregations in western regions, pitched the issues and concerns of the tribal people at the UN High Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development which is one of the functional commissions/arm of the UN Economic and Social Council.
Mr Joshi made a statement at the convention of the forum that concluded under the aegis of the Council in New York on Wednesday.
This high-level platform is to follow-up and review the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals and it provides for the full and effective participation of all States Members of the United Nations and States members of specialised agencies.
Ms Marie Chatardová, President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the UN the week long meet while the concluding session on Wednesday was addressed by the UN Secretary General Antonio Gutierres. "We need to embed the Agenda for 2030--for prosperity and peace on a healthy planet--, into everything that we do", said Mr Guterres.

The Rajasthani NGO's participation at the high platform is significant as representatives of only seven such bodies were selected from all over the world to make oral statement at the forum.
Making his statement Mr Joshi said the NGO has been promoting community owned solutions for sustainable development of tribal groups in Western India.

He said "top to bottom approach being followed in framing of policies and actions for their development by authorities, sometimes fail to consider the real underlying issues of the problem and tend to address the superficial aspects of it".
'VAAGDHARA' therefore emphasises on promoting a strong community involvement in the planning process to come up with more pragmatic solutions to the felt needs. The Indigenous communities are a source of inspiration and they have multiple solutions for adapting to current and emerging challenges", he said.

It is always important to identify the best practices through the Participatory Approaches, Mr Joshi added.

The development of indigenous communities should never be solely in the hands of external stakeholders, the activist said.
In order to promote the local solutions, the NGO had conducted a Tribal Sovereignty March reaching more than 10,000 individuals.
The march focused on identifying the best practices through the participatory approach involving people from different age groups and backgrounds.

The best practices which were identified through the process include traditional eco-friendly farming with nutri-sensitive integrated and sustainable farming system.
For increasing knowledge and awareness among the community the NGO also evolved an indigenous learning platform of V-Chopal, Mr Joshi said adding 'this is for a regular two-way dialogue, where different development issues are discussed by the community members.''
He said "VAAGDHARA is also making efforts for capacity building among the youth, community leaders and community based organisations, so that they can demand their entitlements and start their campaign for development.
"For achieving the sustainable and equitable development for indigenous communities, the organisation has adopted the above identified best practices and is making efforts to reach a large number of indigenous families in western part of India to promote these local solutions and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030", he concluded.
