Despite Punjab's 6 wicket win; CSK stay at top

Mohali, May 5 (UNI) Kings XI won against Chennai Super Kings by six wickets with 12 balls to spare in their last league match of the IPL at the IS Bindra Stadium here on Sunday.
Though Punjab won, but they are out of IPL play-offs. Chennai are still at top and will play in qualifier 1 while Punjab have won for sixth time from 14 matches and rise to sixth position from 8th.
Earlier, Kings XI Punjab won the toss and elected to field asking CSK to bat.
CSK piled up 170/5 while chasing a target of 171 runs, Punjab scored 173/4 with 2 overs remaining.
For Punjab Sam Curran 35/3 and Mohammed Shami 17/2 were the wicket takers.
CSK opening pair Shane Watson and F du Plessis went on to add 30 runs for the first wicket.
Sam Curran gave a breakthrough in powerplay by removing opener Shane Watson in the 5th over. Watson scored 7 off 11 balls with a 1 four. CSK's 50 came in the first ball of the 8th over when Raina hit Ashwin for four towards the third man.
After Watson's exit duo of du Plessis and Raina piled up 120 runs for the second wicket partnership smashing Punjab bowlers to boundaries.
In the first ball of the 13th over du Plessis came with 1 run in Ashwin's spell to bring a half-century and then in same over 100 also came up.
Suresh Raina at the other end also hammered Punjab bowlers bringing up his 50 in the 2nd ball of the 15th over charging Ashwin for four towards deep midwicket.
After playing his 50 knock Raina scored 3 more runs and was caught at short fine leg by Shami in Curran's spell in the 17th over. Raina's 53 came in 38 balls striking 5 fours and 2 sixes.
After Raina du Plessis who was at his best was stopped by Curran with a yorker in the 19th over.
du Plessis blasted 96 off 55 balls with 10 fours and 4 sixes. Then in the last over CSK lost two wickets in form of Rayudu 1, and Jadhav 0.
However, Dhoni 10 and Dwayne Bravo 1 remained not out.

KXIP openers K L Rahul and Chris Gayle opened the innings and put on 108 runs for the first wicket
partnership.
After 3rd over CSK were 23/0 at this stage while Punjab were ahead of CSK at 33/0.
In the very fourth half century for Punjab and then individual blistering half century for Rahul in just 19 balls after charging Harbhajan Singh for six over lonng on in the last ball of the same over.
It was K L Rahul the show man who shouldered the responsbility of charging CSK bowlers especially Harbhajan Singh and Deepak Chahar for boundaries while Gayle bat did little talking stayed at the other end, but later steadied his innings.
Punjab came up with 100 in the 9th over.
However, Harbhajan Singh took sweet revenge giving a breakthrough for CSK picking up two crucial wickets of Rahul and Gayle in the 11th over. Rahul was caught by Tahir in Harbhajan's spell.
Rahul 71 off 36 balls with 7 fours 5 sixes. This was sixth time Harbhajan Singh took wicket of Gayle.
Gayle 28 came off on 28 balls 2 fours 2 sixes.
After Gayle Mayank Agarwal came in and stayed for a short stint contributing 7 off 6 balls with one four caught at deep backward square by Jadeja in Harbhajan's spell.
After Agarwal's exit Mandeep singh and Nicholas Pooran stiched an important innings adding 46 runs for the fourth wicket partnership.
But the partnership was broken after Jadeja scalped wicket of Pooran in the 17th over caught behind by keeper Dhoni. Pooran scored 36 off 22 balls with 2 fours 3 sixes.
However, in the 18th over of the last ball Curran hit Imran Tahir for four with the winning runs.
For CSK Harbhajan 57/3 and Ravindra Jadeja picked one wicket.
