Delhi NCR emerges as a top 10 global trips market for Uber

Kolkata, Sep 28 (UNI) Uber today announced that Delhi NCR ranks amongst its top 10 markets globally based on the number of trips taken in the month of September.

Delhi is the only Indian city to have made it to the top 10, highlighting its strategic importance in Uber’s global portfolio, with residents taking more than 1 million rides each week.

As Delhi residents resume travel after the lengthy lockdown, Uber data reveals that cars have emerged as the most preferred mode of commuting, followed closely by low cost products such as Auto and Moto.

Other interesting rider trends point to an increase in longer distance trips, with the busiest hours weekly being 8 AM - 10 AM. Additionally, not only do Delhiites kick-start their week with an Uber ride, they also end it with one as Mondays and Fridays are the busiest days of the week for drivers.

Commenting on the milestone, Prabhjeet Singh, President, Uber India and South Asia, said, “We are thrilled to see Delhi as one of Uber’s top 10 global markets in terms of number of trips in the month of September, which underscores India’s important role as a contributor to Uber’s business growth. As people start travelling again, we are seeing green shoots of recovery in the capital which further underscores the promising potential of Delhi and India.’’

Earlier this month, Uber also announced that its popular and affordable Uber Auto service was recovering briskly, with cities like Delhi rebounding to almost 80% of pre-COVID levels, followed by Jaipur and Chandigarh recovering to 50%.

As regular life resumes in cities and rider demand increases, Uber is prioritizing low cost products, like Auto and Moto, to lead growth for its mobility business.

Safety remains a top priority and over the last few months, Uber has made substantial investments to procure safety supplies for drivers and implemented innovative technology-driven solutions to help riders and drivers feel safer while on a trip.

These include a comprehensive set of safety measures, such as the Go Online Checklist, a mandatory mask policy for both riders and drivers, pre-trip mask verification selfies for drivers and mandatory driver education on safety SOPs.

The company has also updated its cancellation policy allowing both riders and drivers to cancel trips if they don’t feel safe, driving a shared sense of responsibility for everyone using the platform.

Additionally, Uber was also the first ridesharing company in India to pioneer and install floor-to-ceiling safety screens or safety ‘cockpits’ in 40,000 Premier sedans, along with forging an industry first partnership with Bajaj to facilitate installation of safety screens in 1 lakh autos across the country.
