Defence deals may be off the shelf during PM Modi's Israel visit: MEA official

New Delhi, Jun 29 (UNI) Notwithstanding expectations at certain quarters about major defence deals during the forthcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian Foreign ministry officials today said defence pacts are "cumbersome" and those need longer negotiations and may not be part of this visit.
"Defence deal is a very cumbersome exercise where people from defence arena (are involved). It is part of longer negotiations. That is separate ...and not necessarily with this visit," Joint Secretary West Asia North Africa division at MEA, Bala Bhaskar told reporters here.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the first-ever Indian premier to visit Israel since 1992 when India first established formal diplomatic relations with Israel. Mr Modi will pay a three-day visit from July 4 and his visit will also mark establishment of quarter of a century of diplomatic relations between two countries.
