Day-long prog in Etah has 500 women taking copper-T insertions: 101 centres of UP dist

Etah, Jan 1 (UNI) Etah district of Uttar Pradesh today made a major stride in reproductive healthcare and family planning when as many as 101 sub-centres of the district carried out a total of 500 copper-T insertions in women as part of a joint venture by the state government and non-profit organization HLFPPT.
The three-day programme which concludes tomorrow assumes significance, given that Etah has a higher-than-normal fertility rate at 4.2 and that it is the only one of 75 districts of the state to come up with a ‘Fixed Day Service’ for insertion of IUCD or intrauterine contraceptive device.
Fixed Day Service implies that the first Friday of every month will be dedicated for IUCD insertions as well as follow-up checkups of patients who have already undergone the quick and easy procedure involving what is widely hailed as the most effective non-hormonal contraceptive device.
In all, the programme was launched today in 101 sub-centres (out of the district’s 182 sub-centres) by the local Gram Pradhans.
“We have registered an average of five insertions from each sub-centres,” said Chief Medical Officer (CMO) R C Pandey here.
“Etah’s fertility rate of 4.2 , which implies that a couple has more than 4 kids on an average is higher than normal. It is in a bid to reduce this that we have taken help from HLFPPT (Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust),” he said, after attending the inauguration at Bhupalpur Sub-centre and a Primary Healthcare Centre at Pilua where he interacted with the crowd.
The endeavour, in collaboration with HLFPPT has by far provided six days of training to a total of 200 auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) who were otherwise untrained in this area of healthcare.
''Our goal is to achieve Fixed Day Service in all the 182 centres,'' added Dr Pandey.
On its part, HLFPPT is providing supportive supervision and training to ANMs, nurses and health service providers of each of the 101subcentres, according to Manish Sharma, Program Manager, of HLFPPT which is a 1992-founded adjunct of mini ratna PSU HLL Lifecare Ltd.
“You must all be happy as we are together fighting population rise” he added, while addressing the villagers, accredited social health activists and Anganwaadi members.
