Coir Board to open outlets across states: Mishra

Kochi, Feb 4(UNI) The Coir Board was planning to open coir products outlets across the country as part of promoting and coir products in the country, Union Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Kalraj Mishra said today.
Addressing the media the Coir Board head quarters here, he stressed the need for enhancing the quality of products and, hence, taking measures to initiate quality management to cop up with the manufactures in foreign countries.
Pointing out that the centre was giving more importance for the development of the coir industry through technology upgradation, modernization, product development and infrastructure creation, Mr Mishra said that the coir exports reached an all time high of Rs 1630 crore during the year 2014-2015.
Regarding new programmes on hand for development of the coir sector, the Union Minister said that administrative approvals given and first installment of funds released for setting up of 14 new coir clusters, with a total outlay of Rs 55 crore out of which the Central Government grand would be Rs 40 crore, under the SFURTI programme.
The Board had also proposed to organise the fourth edition of International coir fair at Cominatre from July 15 to 18, with emphasis on Make in India and National Vendor development Programmes.
The provisional figures on export of coir products during 2015-2016, as on November 2015 reached to Rs 1116.63 crore with 439290 MT quality as against Rs 1054.63 crore with 383127 MT quantity during corresponding period of the previous year.
Informing that that approvals had already given and first installment of funds released for setting up of three start ups in coir sector (livelihood Business Incubation centers) under the ASPIRE scheme of the Ministry of MSME at Thanjavur, Rajamudry and Bhubanewswar, he said two more such start ups proposed for Alleppy and Bangalore.
Stating that Introduction of a franchisee based and IT enabled new strategy for domestic marketing, Mr Mishra said that 100 numbers of franchisee outlets proposed in each states aimed at providing direct and indirect employment to 25000 persons in this sector.
The Minister also said that Coir Boards central coir research institute, Kalavoor and Central institute of coir technology, Bangalore were proposed to be made as ''centers of excellence.''
