Centre rejected the State Government’s proposal on granting religion status to Lingayaths.

Bengaluru, Dec 10(UNI) In a set back to the former Chief minister Siddaramaiah, the Union Government had rejected the previous Congress Government’s proposal to declare Lingayath as a separate religion in Karnataka, and communicated the same to the Karnataka High Court, on Monday.
In a communiqué to the Karnataka High Court, which was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an advocate, questioning the decision of the Karnataka Government, recommending the Center to consider for the demand of a separate religion status to the Lingayaths in Karnataka, the Union Government’s deputy Solicitor General, had said that Centre had rejected the proposal.
The demand for separate Lingayath religion, was very much vocal during the Assembly Elections in Karnataka and the then Chief minister Siddaramaiah had strongly defended his action in conceding the demand and recommended the same to the Center, after a favorable report received from an expert committee constituted to look into the issue.
