Cabral assures reliable, adequate power to industry

Panaji, Sep 28 (UNI) Goa Power Minister Nilesh Cabral has said that there have been significant improvements in terms of affordable and quality power in the state and assured local industries of reliable uninterrupted power supply.

Speaking at a virtual panel discussion on “Re-think Energy” organised by the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), he stressed upon more solar power generation.

The minister said he had big plans to reform the electricity sector in Goa but lost two years due to the Covid pandemic.
Claiming that Goa gives cheapest power to its consumers compared to other states, Mr Cabral asked the industry leaders to give written inputs so that he could take up specific matters with his department.
''Such interactions should be held more often so that the consumer viewpoints can also be looked at,'' he said and urged the industry to set up solar power generation units.
He said the government would be promoting renewable energy storage which would be released back to the grid at peak hours to augment power supply through Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).
He also asked the industry for suggestions in making the business plan for the Electricity Department for the next three years.

Mr Cabral asked the industry opinion on Open Access of power wherein large consumers have access to transmission and distribution networks to obtain electricity from other suppliers.

The eminent panelists representing various Industrial sectors included GCCI president Ralph De Sousa (Tourism), Pravin Khullar (Pharma), M Durairaj (Power), Gautam Raj ( Manufacturing), Hari Kaul (Retail) and Joseph D’ Souza ( Agri and Basic Infra).

Ralph De Sousa said the tourism sector was heavily dependent on quality power for operation, production, utilities and recreational facilities.

''Interruptions, fluctuations & power drops create a total disruption in this sector. Thus hoteliers are forced to depend on DG sets which are expensive to run,'' he said.

The panelists urged the government to focus on adequate power (without peak load restriction), reliability ( without interruption), affordable (internationally reasonable and quality (without fluctuation).

Mr Khullar requested the Electricity Department to permit momentary grid synchronisation which will reduce the power interruptions.
