New Delhi, Feb 26 (UNI) Delhi High Court, after an urgent hearing, directed cops to take suo motu action in relation to violence case over the Citizenship Amendment Act.
After passing of the new citizenship law, widely perceived as anti-Muslim, communal violence was witnessed in northeast Delhi in which 23 people were killed. The dead included a Delhi Police Head Constable and an Intelligence Bureau Officer. Over 180 others have been injured.
A writ petition was filed in the High Court for hearing on an urgent basis. It sought safe passage for the injured with adequate medical facilities. Plaintiff submitted that hundreds of persons, injured in large-scale violence in Delhi, were unable to move to a bigger hospital.
A Division Bench of Justices S Muralidhar and Anup J Bhambhani, after urgent hearing on the petition, directed Delhi Police to provide safe passage to all injured victims of the violence to Government Hospitals for treatment. The HC further said the primary concern at this stage is safety of the injured and ensure their safe passage at Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, Lok Nayak Jaya Prakash Narayan Hospital or Maulana Azad or any other Government medical institution.
The order, Delhi High Court ruled, be communicated to the Medical Superintendents of the Guru Tegh Bahadur and Lok Nayak Jaya Prakash Narayan hospitals in Delhi and called for a compliance report.
Delhi Police, it said, does not require direction to take action in relation to the violence and should take suo motu action as this is important. The Court further asked Government Counsel to advise Delhi Police Commissioner to lodge FIRs against the persons delivering alleged hate speeches. After hearing in violence case, the HC said it can not allow another 1984 riots case to happen. The matter was adjourned for tomorrow for further hearing.
