Bengal Police crack down bank robbery, arrested main kingpin and associates and recover more than half of over Rs 17 lakh in Hooghly

Kolkata, Jun 6 (UNI) West Bengal police today made a major breakthrough by arresting the prime accused and his three associates in a bank robbery, in which they robbed nearly 18 lakh in cash from vault and cash boxes from a national bank in the Hooghly district of West Bengal on Friday.The quartet, headed by prime accused Pritam Ghosh alias Babai, had stormed into the nationalised bank at Rajendra Avenue in Uttar Para (Hooghly) on Friday noon and decamped with Rs 17 lakh 28,326 at gunpoint.Chandanagar Police Commissionrate said the prime accused had cycled from Bihar during lockdown and founded a gang of four to rob the suburban bank taking advantage of thin staff and scanty customers in the unlock period. The robbery was committed with a gun point and using two two-wheeler.Police following the CCTV footages and clue from some cash fell from the robbers during flee made several raids and rounded all four suspects, who would be produced before a court for judicial procedure.
The main accused is a hard core criminal, who had been in jail for plundering a petrol pump in Odisha in 2014, police said.
Police recovered over Rs 10 lakh cash from the prime accused, as well as some arms and ammunition, mobile phones and motor cycle.
